He was NOT lying!

I wasn’t exactly sure how addicting RSS Feeds were when Dr. Halavais warned us last Thursday. I view tons of sites, but I usually just hop around when deemed necessary (usually at work, between the slowest hour of my life, 5-6p.m.). I didn’t really understand how they could be “addicting”, per se, though as instructed I dabbled with various feeds using Google Reader, which I found to be unbelievably easy seeing as I had a pre-established G-Mail account.

Needless to say, my Google Reader has been open all day, and I’m pretty sure if I am ever fired, my Google Reader will probably play a large factor.

That was a joke! I swear…

Regardless, in the one day I’ve had my Google Reader set up, I created four different folders to keep my subscriptions organized, one being a folder called “Classes”, which contains the Intro Interactive blog as well as the blogs of my peers (I’m in the process of moving my entire blogroll from WordPress over to Google). Then, I have a News folder, which contains the CNN feed I set up. It’s pretty obvious that reading the news and being informed is a plus. I must admit, I usually favor Entertainment and not enough news, so I’m making it a goal of mine to read up on the important events of the world a little more often! While I was at it, I also subscribed to CNN’s Technology section feed too. I’m sure that’ll bring tons of new topics for me to write about so that this here blog never gets stale.

My “Entertainment” folder contains all of the media sites I check on a regular basis, starting with the Bible of Entertainment news, Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch Blog. It’s like the mecca of Entertainment findings. So vital. I can’t get enough of Michael Sleazak, Annie Barrett, and the rest of the extremely witty and clever Pop Culture freaks writers. I Love it. Of course, needless to say, EW is not where one goes for quality music coverage, so I also had to add Pitchfork and Stereogum , as well, so I can be well informed of any updated No Doubt news (not covered by the official fan forum, of course), as well as tour dates for the Foo Fighters, Garbage, and every other band I’ve grown obsessed with over the years. It seems after this paragraph, I apparently also look like quite the freak Entertainment geek.

On a more serious note, I found a couple really cool feeds as I was perusing my fellow classmates’ blogs. Michele had blogged about some great Mac blogs that she had found, because apparently she loves Macs! I just recently bought a brand spankin’ new Macbook, so I immediately took her suggestions and totally loved the two blogs I found through her. One is called Freeware OS X and the other, Free Mac Blog. I won’t elaborate, because they’ve already been talked about, but these blogs provide tons of free software and downloads for Macs; just one example of the plethora of information/feeds out there that can be found from simply browsing around. (Thanks, Michele!)

I really never paid attention to feeds until now, but I’m rather glad I did! It’s a wonderful way to stay organized and keep up on all my news. Plus, I’ve already recommended it to friends, who have already signed up for their own Google Reader.

The viral power of the Internet. Score!

  1. Wow, that was an intense post. So I guess you really liked the blogs you picked. Beside, getting a new laptop why else did you like those sites?

  2. Especially for band news, there are ways to set up feeds that continually do searches for new info for you. And, of course, Upcoming… And be sure to add the feeds from e.g., delicious, flickr, & digg with the tags for your band. Ask me how! :)

Should link to sites or samples for the bands. I know No Doubt (heck, I even hung out with their pre-blowup bassist when I was still living in OC), but don’t know anything about the other two.

“Per se,” not “per say” ;)

  3. Damn addictive free downloads! We should all have a mac party Thursday & share what we’ve since downloaded! I think there’s a good bunch of us with macbooks.
